Fill in the blank:

There’s no such thing as too much _____________________.

If you said storage, you are correct! Storage solutions are not only a key organizational aid, they can help you maintain a cleaner, clutter-less home that is conducive to productivity, calm, and peace of mind. And, bonus, you’ll always know exactly where your favorite spatula (we all have one), 3.0mm Phillips head, and child’s soccer cleats are without having to tear apart the house in a frantic search.

How, and where, can you integrate innovative storage space solutions into your home for maximum impact?

Must-Have Storage Space Solutions

When building a custom home, you have the opportunity to create space that is unique, and uniquely tailored to your needs, lifestyle, and aspirations. While home gyms, theaters, pools, rooftop decks, and smart tech all vie for attention, simple storage is one of the most sought-after, desired features among homeowners. When it comes to this household must-have, plan early, and plan for abundance!

1. Garage

Joe Garcia, owner of G&G, says, “Garage cabinets are a big deal these days.” For good reason: Half of homeowners say the garage is the most disorganized space in their home. One-third of those with two-car garages can only park one car and a quarter can’t park at all! It’s not the lack of space that’s leaving our vehicles out in the cold – it’s the lack of smart storage and organization.

You can beat those odds, and enjoy a garage that’s the envy of your neighbors. Wall-mounted cabinets,  heavy-duty shelving, bins to keep small bits and pieces organized, workbench, tool drawers, pegboards, overhead storage (perfect for seasonal items), hanging or wall-mounted bike and kayak racks… The list goes on and on. The trick is knowing how you want to use your garage and finding solutions that ensure that everything that belongs there has a dedicated home. And everything that doesn’t goes away!

2. Kitchen

If garages are the most disorganized areas, then the kitchen must be a close second. Often the heart of the home, it is all too easy for this space to groan under the weight of appliances (and so many cords!), dishes, pots and pans, pantry items, and – let’s be real – mail on the counters, homework on the island, chargers here, there, and everywhere. Random objects do have a way of making themselves at home in the kitchen.

Beyond drawers (please, no junk drawers!), island “information stations” for notes/mail, and pull-out/pull-down drawers and shelves, consider maximizing storage with a butler’s pantry, second kitchen, and/or appliance garage. These are game-changers.

3. Utility Spaces

While they can be a 10 as far as style and aesthetics, spaces such as the mudroom and laundry room are there to work. Or they should be! And they can be with shoe/boot racks, drip trays, cubbies with coat hooks, bins for sports/activity gear, a “Put Your Field Trip Permission Slip, Etc. Here!” organizer, water dispenser for busy outdoor days, clothes hampers, shelving for cleaning/laundry supplies, and more. Again, think about how this space will be used and design storage/organizational solutions that work for your household.

4. Kids’ Rooms

When you have a child or children in your household, you know that they come with a lot of … stuff. And it’s everywhere. Raise your hand if you’ve stepped on a LEGO barefoot. A beautiful walk-in closet for your master suite, complete with built-ins, is a must for many building custom homes; give the little ones the same chance to keep their space clutter-free.

Under-bed drawers and ottomans are great for extra linens and bedding, while closet shelving can help with toy-control. Invest in shelving with clear bins so they can see what goes where – and hopefully (with a little help) put items away when they’re done. Everything should be kid-level and easily accessible.

5. Stylish Storage

Storage space solutions need not be strictly utilitarian. After all, how do you effectively store and display favorite pieces and accessories? Elegant floating shelves in your great room or kitchen, for example, provide the opportunity to show off your personality, giving prized items pride of place while the rest of your space remains uncluttered. Think of a wine wall as the ultimate example. Both beautiful and functional, it becomes a focal point in and of itself.
