What are the latest home design trends shaping the industry? And will some of them help shape your custom home?

Latest Home Design Trends

First, let’s take a look at big movements impacting interior design throughout the home:

Warmth and Welcome

Home is our refuge, and there is a distinct drive towards all things warm: Earthy, organic, and natural colors and tones, woods, washes, and accessories help create an environment that nurtures and nourishes the body and soul. Pantone’s Color of the Year, for example, is Mocha Mousse. The tastemaker says the chocolatey, brewed coffee hue “captures a global mood of connection, comfort, and harmony.”

This is certainly the vibe that homeowners want to create in their own sanctuaries. In addition to color, they are infusing warmth into their spaces with organic materials (natural upholstery, stone, wood), furnishings with rounded forms, touch-friendly textures (fleece, tweed, boucle, corduroy), and architectural elements, such as arches to soften the rough edges of life.

Personalization and Customization

Minimalist styles, such as Scandinavian, have proven incredibly, and enduringly, popular as we seek to clear the clutter from our lives – literally and figuratively. This is not a trend that is fading away. However, there is a push towards incorporating more color, luxuriant textures, woven materials, bold patterns, and other elements that help your space reflect your unique personality and style. A little “more is more.”

The key to customized spaces is to balance functionality with personality. Consider how you want to use the room for maximum efficiency and accessibility. From there, layer in pieces that reflect your passions, your travels, your interests, your memories. You end up with a room that is truly your own.

Health and Wellness

Home is the hub for health and wellness, with more homeowners wanting spaces that calm, reenergize, and restore the body and mind. It’s a trend that’s been generating lots of steam in recent years, and we continue to see great demand for luxury showerheads with attachments for massage and body scrubbing, wet rooms for an immersive experience, integrated sound systems, and saunas that complement a balanced lifestyle.

A trend that dovetails with this perfectly is biophilic design – or the use of natural elements, like plants, water features, and light in indoor spaces. Simply adding some greenery and taking steps to maximize sun exposure in health-focused areas can ramp up your results (both in terms of aesthetics and wellness!)

Interior Design Inspiration

The need for warmth and comfort, personalization, and a healthy living environment are key driving trends. How about some specifics that can inspire your own design?

Ceiling Treatments

Think of your ceiling as a “fifth wall” and you’ll have a powerful ally in transforming any space. You’ve already seen plenty of ceiling treatments; exposed beams are one of our favorites! But they can encompass so much more, including wallpaper, paneling, molding, tile, brick, beaded-board, and box beams. Color can be a game-changer here as well (A black ceiling? Intriguing, right?). You can be as subtle or as bold as you please.

Paneled Appliances

Wall-to-wall stainless steel may not be your desired aesthetic. This is where paneled appliances come in. They are designed to blend into your kitchen space without becoming visual distractions – or sources of unending clutter. Custom coverings can match your surrounding cabinetry flawlessly, giving you an elegant streamlined look. Functionality is also maximized: Everything is discreetly stored until needed, when it is easily accessible and ready for you.

Elevated Utility

Laundry rooms and mudrooms are highly valued by homeowners. For good reason: The epitome of function, they make life easier and more convenient. But this is your custom home – so why not expect them to make life more elegant and beautiful as well?  We love the trend towards more sophisticated utility rooms, with luxe cabinets, rich colors and finishes, tasteful (yet effective) lighting, carefully curated artwork and accessories, and other touches that help make routine household tasks a soothing part of our daily lives.

Outdoor Living Rooms

Outdoor living is another trend that shows no signs of slowing. This design focus has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, and homeowners are still craving a connection to the great outdoors. Increasingly, they want an outdoor deck/patio/porch that feels and acts as a living room. They are designing these spaces just as intentionally as their interior living rooms, complete with fireplaces, climate control features, like fans, awnings, automatic shades, etc., sumptuous furnishings, rugs, throws and pillows, televisions, sound systems, and more.

Outdoor cooking/dining options are also highly sought-after, with many custom homeowners desiring multiple cooking options (grills, smokers, pizza ovens, exterior ranges/stoves), as well as full kitchen and dining amenities that easily open into and integrate into the interior kitchen for great, organic flow. This is an effective way to maximize your living space and your enjoyment of it.

Color Drenching

Both a technique and a trend, color drenching is an exciting approach to monochromatic schemes. Once a color is chosen, it is taken everywhere – from ceilings and walls to furnishings, window treatments, and accessories. While monochromatic, it is not monotonous as you’ll have different shades of your chosen hue to play with, as well as different finishing effects (e.g. matte and glossy) on different types of surfaces (wood, tile, drywall, brick, etc.). When done well, the technique can help open up rooms, create visual height, and add an element of depth and dimension that are impossible not to fall for.

Color drenching is a great way to get rich, saturated color, and it plays nicely with other trends we’re seeing (such as personalization and a “more is more” approach). It
